Two millennial-courting comedies that just might become the next big cult hits…
Broad City…In a perfect world, this would receive the attention that “Girls” does as it may actually be a technically “better” exploration of Brooklyn female friendship, and is certainly a lot funnier. The new season began with a classic sequence of Ilana and Abbie going deep into the bowels of the NYC subway system, and then a quest to find an air conditioner. Find out why everyone from Hannibal Buress to Seth Rogen makes an appearance, but if I had one complaint, it’s that I really can’t watch this series while eating anything. Grade: B+
Man Seeking Woman…Also embracing an absurdist sense of comedy, this series makes the romantic tribulations of Jay Baruchel’s lead character literal as he’s set up on a blind date with a literal troll and his ex-girlfriend new boyfriend is literally Hitler. I wish the timing were a bit tighter, and it’ll be interesting to see how well this gimmick plays long-term, but I’m willing to see where it goes. Grade for Pilot Only: B
