It’s rare we get an “off day” from politics around here. Between primaries, near-daily debates (or “town halls”), candidates dropping out, and Supreme Court deaths, it’s becoming increasingly infrequent that we get a chance to talk about the old favorites: movies, TV, and books.
So I figured I’d take advantage by praising ABC’s “Galavant.” Sure, the series ended two weeks back, and it may not be the timeliest article what with the whole political landscape changing between now and then (not to mention bigger shows like “Walking Dead” and “Better Call Saul” changing the media landscape). But for people looking for a quality way to zone out for a while, this is it.
The show is excellent, and probably the only one I’ll actually watch on ABC this year, so they would do well to renew it. I particularly liked the hilarious, self-aware season (hope not series?) finale. The show seemed to even acknowledge that it’s unlikely it’ll be renewed and the cast will have to find work on “some cheap ass cable show” in a song sung by Weird Al Yankovich, no less. Now that’s real escapist entertainment.
It was as satisfying a finale as you could hope for if the series doesn’t come back—I’m not usually a shipper, but who didn’t want to see Galavant and Isabella happily ever after?—but I’m still hoping against hope that it does. Either way, I’d recommend catching up with the series, particularly season two which was funnier, looser, and even edgier than most other series desperately trying to grab your attention.
After all, how many shows would make jokes about their own impending demise? And how many of those would also be fairy tale musicals with bleeped out curse words? I’ve never seen anything quite like “Galavant” before, and that’s more than enough for a season 3. Grade for Season Two: A-…Grade for Season Two Finale: A
