I must be the last person on the planet watching this show since NBC cancelled it back in the spring after only two historically-low rated episodes, but then brought it back in the summer (during the Saturday night dead zone) to burn off the remaining episodes they had shot. Well it’s a long way from 2 episodes to 13 episodes, and I guess I can only surmise that I didn’t have a lot to watch during the summer (Big Brother doesn’t do it for some folks) and was bored as hell on a Wednesday night and caught up with this show On Demand.
Anyway, somewhere between burning through episodes I actually caught tonight’s series finale live, and what does the show offer up to those that stuck with it? A big, fat twist that’s actually a really disappointing way to end the series. It turns out [spoilers…hahaha, like anyone gives a shit] that the real “alter” was the good-guy Dr. Jekyll (Jason Cole) and the original identity was bad-guy Hr. Hyde (Ian Price). They were once brothers, but Ian “accidentally” killed Jason, and some mind-altering therapy on Ian by the sinister-ish Dr. Carmello actually led to the creation of Jason Cole. Not only that, but that final scene seems to suggest that Dr. Carmello (boo you, James Cromwell!) was performing surgery not to get rid of Mr. Hyde/Ian Price, but to take out Dr. Jekyll/Jason Cole. We’ll never know exactly why he made that decision, or what Ian did to Ruben, who’s since gone missing and was probably murdered by Ian.
Any way you look at it, it was a very bleak, depressing ending to a show that almost never got that dark. [Except for some ridiculously melodramatic moments usually involving Olivia, who Jason/Ian were in love with.] The death of our life-saving hero and triumph of our charmless villain, not to mention the probable death of our hero’s sidekick? It’s a bit much for the final ten minutes of a shallow, supposedly-fun NBC medical procedural, and I can’t imagine the fans being thrilled with it…all three of us. Grade for finale: C-…Grade for show: C+
No cliffhanger?! They didn’t plan on getting cancelled. So obviously someone was gonna stop the old Dr from killing Jason. And I thought the ending of Continuum left me hanging. At least that has another season.
This show was amazing starting when you see Ian on the plane with Reuben all the way to the end. Seeing his luggage all alone in the airport was awesome. And the fact that they were brothers was a big l twist. But that Jason was the alter made up for me not getting to be surprised at The Sixth Sense, Shutter Island & Saw 7
I want to see season 2 lol someone tie up the lose ends
