Just as predicted in the most recent episode of the Alabama Liberal podcast, last night wasn’t merely a blue wave, it was a blue tsunami…
–Democrats flipped senate seats AND governor’s mansions in Iowa, Ohio, and Texas.
–They won a senate seat in South Carolina for the first time this century, and the first one in Kansas in nearly a full century.
–They flipped THREE House seats in Iowa (there are only four total).
–Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first black woman elected governor in American history and in Georgia no less, along with Jon Ossoff’s stunning near-20-point victory.
–Over and over, Democrats made history with groundbreaking candidates: the first Native American woman senator (Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota), the first elected female governor of Ohio (Amy Acton), the first elected female senator in South Carolina (Annie Andrews), the first Paralympian senator (Josh Turek in Iowa), the first Muslim senator (Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan), the first openly gay senator (Chris Pappas in New Hampshire), the first Hispanic for Texas (Gina Hinojosa), etc. …Democrats not only expanded their electoral map into deep red states–obviously the most important thing–but expanded the possibilities of who is considered electable in Trump’s America, a stunning rebuke to his relentless petty bigotry.
–For House races, they were able to flip seats even in Ohio, Texas, and Indiana, states that had undergone corrupt mid-decade gerrymandering specifically to prevent them from doing so.
–They needed to flip 4 seats, but they’ll wind up flipping at least 7 (Alaska and even Mississippi are still possible…Mississippi) with NONE of them being squeakers.
–James Talarico did not just beat Ken Paxton, but won by 12-points…
–This is the worst midterm loss for a party in power in 50 years; with the 1976 elections being in the wake of Nixon resigning from Watergate.
Could Alabama be the next blue target? The “Solid South” instinctive conservatism is over.
Even in Alabama–one of the few states Trump is still popular or Republican campaigns even wanted him to join them–the Democratic candidate Everett Wess over-performed. This was despite no name recognition whatsoever (on the Wikipedia page for the AL senate race, he has no photo, no page of his own, and his job is listed as “perennial candidate”), and virtually no cash. Wess had one of the lowest senate campaign fundraising totals of 2026, apparently raising less than 200K, and about half the public amount being donations he gave to himself.
Was it remotely realistic for him to compete with three-term Representative Barry Moore who was sitting on nearly 5-million in cash? Could even Alabama have gone blue with a half-way well-known candidate and a somewhat-even fundraising field? Well, if Georgia, South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, and Mississippi can, then yes, Alabama could too.
Even though MAGA will rebrand into something equally-foolish in 2029, Trumpism is over
On various social media sites, The Horde (conservative white men who all say the same thing with some literally being bots rather than actual humans) are sour and engaging in their same tired, juvenile rhetoric (whether they’re 16 or 60 is impossible to tell based on the language they’re using). But NOBODY wants to hear it. We’re sick of you, and ready to move on whether you are or not.
The Trump era is officially over. People are sick of a crazy, incompetent POTUS who makes himself rich while the people grow poor; a man who can’t do a damn thing positive for people but is an expert at hurling insults online. [My latest podcast is called “Imposter Kingdom: When the ‘President’ is an Internet Troll.”] His voters are just like him, but today they are less relevant than they have been in over a decade.
Congratulations America, YOU are the real winners today.
