Not as good a movie as the great reviews or ecstatic box office would suggest, but still a pretty decent time for the 50 or so people who haven’t seen it yet.
What Works: It has the best beginning for a movie (so far) this year, as we’re treated to a slow motion fallout from a combination shoot-out/car-crash with inventive “fake” opening credits that parody the cast and director. It’s not every superhero movie that can turn “Angel of the Morning” into an excitingly nihilistic ballad of destruction.
Ryan Reynolds is clearly savoring his best role in years, and one of the few that truly fits him. Too often, he’s seemed like he can’t decide if he wants to play a bland, flavorless romantic comedy doofus (“The Proposal,” “Definitely, Maybe”), a bland action-hero doofus (“Safe House,” “Green Lantern,” “R.I.P.D.” “Self/less”), or someone with an actual personality. This movie revives the smart-ass early Reynolds of “Waiting” and “Van Wilder” or later, better indies like “Mississippi Grind” with a little bit of the pathos he displayed in what is—to me—his only truly great performance in “Buried.” Reynolds may never be a great actor, but he’s starting to look like a compelling movie star again, and that’s better than it’s been in a long time.
What Doesn’t: “Deadpool” the film and character keep breaking the fourth wall to tell us that this isn’t a typical superhero film, but only a handful of sequences truly are that different from other smartass superhero deconstructions like “Kick Ass,” “Super,” or “Kick Ass 2.” In many ways, this movie is a lot less nervy and truly groundbreaking than any of those. [Though Stan Lee’s strip-club cameo is pretty great.]
One of the biggest weaknesses of the film is a common problen in all Marvel properties: weak, forgettable villains. Gina Carano isn’t given anything much to do, and the generic “British villain” could have been replaced with a department store mannequin. It’s pretty bad when a CGI character made out of steel (Colossus) and a guy in a mask are out-acting you. Plus, “Deadpool” was made on a small-ish budget for a film like this, and that’s probably why there’s only two real action sequences—the freeway one that opens the film, and the closer—and the ending one felt too paint-by-numbers. All in all, the film starts better than it ends.
What I Would Have Done Differently: The movie gets so much right—even making-fun of the confusing X-Men timelines—that it’s hard to fault it too much for being, in the end, an experience that doesn’t really stick with you long after you leave the theater.
