So the Mongol Horde, I mean, SS, I mean, Tea Party got everything they wanted this past week and saw the three branches of government bow to them in an unprecedented way for a group that is 1. Not a major political party, 2. Only been around 3 years (tough break Green Party!), 3. Not even a majority within a party that only controls the house but not the senate or executive branch, so they are a minority within a minority, 4. Has virtually no popular support left with most of the public now embarrassed they voted in these assholes. Except that even then most people didn’t vote for them as 2010 didn’t see a majority of the country vote.
The question everyone (and by everyone, I mean the 5 percent of America paying attention to politics that’s not conservative) wants to know is “How are they doing this?” How are they able to be so effective, so strong, and so deadly in the face of a largely impotent liberal response? The answer is that the Tea Party isn’t even Democrats or liberals or progressives biggest enemy, it’s liberal infighting.
Some see that as overblown. They say that all parties squabble, and ours will eventually rally when they have to, but history has proven they can’t or won’t. I would love to say that our party will turn it around and rally and if they don’t, then we’ll riot in the streets but the sad truth is that the sorry state of liberal infighting makes me wonder if we could even riot in the same direction.
Obama says one thing and Michael Moore slams him for it and Ed Shultz slams Moore and Keith Olbermann slams Ed Shultz and then people boycott MSNBC for not being liberal enough and then Kucinich throws his two cents in to stay relevant and then MoveOn.org organizes a campaign around his two cents and then The Daily Show parodies his two cents and then NPR bores everyone to tears and then Bill Maher counters that with something edgy and then The Coffee Party says they’ve gone too far and proceed to kiss the ass of people who hate them and then the original liberal cause just goes down this rabbit hole of infighting and seeing who can look the smartest.
I can’t even post on some liberal message boards without getting sucked into this petty pissing contest of who can make the BEST possible point. You could say “We should kick Republicans out of congress,” and then the first three comments would be 1. From the Coffee Party “We don’t engage in that type of uncivil rhetoric.” 2. From NPR “Technically, you should just kick Republicans out of the House that they control.” 3. From some guy with more time than things to say “There should be an exclamation point after your sentence to indicate excitement or anger.”
Then merely complaining about all the complaints will jump start an argument that you’re a fascist. “All good liberals should welcome a debate!” is the conventional wisdom. The problem is, that’s crippling us. Republicans get things done because they get in a line, back each other up no matter what stupid shit someone like Michelle Bachmann says, and the “planets” of the party know how to back up the “stars.” By “planets” I mean the army of bloggers, PR hacks, strategists, and talking heads that appear in the media ready and willing to defend any stupid utterance that comes out of Rick Perry’s mouth. By “stars” I mean the actual people in government, which we sometimes forget are really the only ones that can help out our liberal causes to an effective degree.
Except that liberals don’t back them up, but we should. The best part is that our job is halfway easy because Barack Obama’s mouth is a lot smarter than Rick Perry’s. I’m not saying you have to agree with every word that the president says just because he’s our guy, but how about just every word someone else on that liberal message board says? How about not nitpicking every word or telling people to either crank up the rhetoric or tone it down to a neutered degree? Because The Coffee Party telling me to become another sleepy, over civilized, NPR liberal nobody listens to is great, except that while they’re bitching out the watch dog, the wolves are making off with all the chickens.
Hear, Hear!
absolutely…totally agree that infighting is holding us back
I want to know how in the fuck are they doing this and where are the Democrats? Get your head out of your ass and STAND up for Americans.
Infighting has got to stop and the rich have to be taxed as well as big business. I say start with oil companies.
Congress is broken ~ WE the people must fix it by getting rid of the members holding the country hostage. Only 46% of American’s vote. We need to ensure more than 75% vote come the next election. Get rid of the tea party and the GOP sell-outs.
You said it! Great blog
