What Republicans say is the reason they don’t support a second stimulus: “We can’t have a blue state bailout.”
But that is horseshit. Blue states pay more taxes and make up the staggering majority of American GDP. [Surprisingly, the economy does not run solely on Cracker Barrels in Wyoming.]
Most & Least Federally Dependent States
Blue states got royally ripped off during the first CoVid stimulus (each NY CoVid case cost 24K while each Alaska CoVid case was 3.3 million), and have been left begging for scraps from the Trump administration.
The truth is that Republicans just don’t like the idea of the government actually helping people, especially giving individual payments to Americans. They are philosophically opposed to this as much anything else, and I think they would find literally any reason to hold up the second wave of individual payments to Americans.
You can see that in the way they approach social security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, WIC, Pell grants, disability, unemployment, minimum wage, labor unions, and those $600 unemployment bonuses they fought earlier in the year. Nearly all of those were FDR or LBJ priorities.
Other than Eisenhower (who would undoubtedly be a “RINO” today) signing disability into law, I have not found an example of Republicans creating a program for the working class or middle class.
I wish someone would direct me to one, because I seriously can’t find it.
