Does Chris Christie Endorsement Really Matter? It Just Might…

By | February 26, 2016

By now, Rubio has collected more political endorsements than The Godfather who carried around politicians “like so many nickels and dimes in your pocket.” He’s had damn-near every big name Republican politician of past (Romney) present (Nikki Haley) and waaay past (Bob Dole).

So people might look at Christie’s endorsement and think “who cares? Rubio has 100 endorsements.” Well…

–Christie is not just any endorsement. Sure, his own presidential campaign didn’t go anywhere, but he’s a two-term Governor of a blue state, and just getting elected to New Jersey twice is an accomplishment. [Despite the fact his poll numbers there now are lower than Alaskan temperatures.] He’s also the former head of the Republican Governor’s Association. He’s not just a sitting governor, he’s the sitting governor.

–It makes Donald seem credible. This is by far the highest profile endorsement “The Donald” has gotten. It’s the kind of endorsement Bernie Sanders would love to get. After all, how weird is it that right now Bernie Sanders has no governor endorsing him but Trump does? It’s that kind-of question that makes it really clear that Sanders “revolution” has stalled out, but Trump’s is just getting started. [Bernie’s best hope of a senate endorsement was Elizabeth Warren, and she’s refused to endorse anybody before her state actually votes.]

–It will inspire others to follow. Only a few hours after Christie endorsed Trump, the Governor of Maine Paul Le Page endorsed him. If Trump does a near-sweep of Super Tuesday states (saaaaayyy, 12 of 13), expect to see many more endorsements follow as Donald’s seeming inevitability keeps going.

–Tactics, tactics, tactics. The story dominating the headlines the weekend before Super-Tuesday could have been all about Rubio scoring a punch on Donald last night (as it was in the post-debate evening). Instead, it’s about Christie’s endorsement of Donald. It robs Rubio of media-oxygen at a time when he needs it most. And instead has actually poisoned the air since Christie is actively going out there beating up on Rubio on Donald’s behalf…

–That’s right, tag-team from New Jersey’s fat bullies. Trump and Christie are NY and NJ, but that temporary divide is going out the window as they team up on mutual nemesis Rubio. Let’s not forget that Christie is one of the most skilled attack dogs in the Republican Party, and he damn near sank Rubio’s candidacy the last time the two faced off that people think directly led to Rubio placing 5th in New Hampshire. [Andy Borowitz even wrote a hilarious article “Christie quits race to focus on tormenting Rubio full time” that will make you laugh, and then make you think it might be true.] In fact, it makes you wonder if Christie wasn’t acting on Donald’s behalf that time too, and how long this nomination has been in the works.

So unlike most endorsements this one seems to carry a bit more relevance and certainly more timeliness…

Christie may not be any endorsement but he is an endorsement and at this point as you pointed out TRUMP really has none. Christie needs a job in the White House. Maybe that is what he is doing.
