Like most country music fans, it’s hard for me to get through most songs without thinking “But how does this person feel about President Obama?” I can’t tell you all the times I’ve been sitting in my truck, getting drunk (getting drunk is no fun if you’re not immediately about to drive somewhere…preferably through a school zone), listening to some “Achy Breaky Heart” and thinking “You know, this Billy Ray Cyrus is okay, but…I mean, just how the fuck does he feel about our president?”
And I feel the same about Hank Williams Jr. who has called Obama a Muslim, a nazi, and a communist traitor to America in the past…month. At a recent concert, he said “Obama hates farmers, our military, and America, and we hate him!”
But how does Hank Williams Jr. REALLY feel about the president? I’m just not sure he’s made his feeling clear enough. He may have given an interview roughly every week for the past five years about how much he hates Obama’s guts, but that’s just too vague for me.
It’s pretty clear to me that Hank is just another thumbs-twiddling fence sitter, afraid to take a stand one way or the other. It’s not enough that he got fired from Monday Night Football for comparing our first black president to Hitler, the symbolic leader of white supremacy. It’s also not enough that he’s repeatedly compared Obama to everyone from Joseph Stalin to Osama Bin Laden. I want to know would he also compare him to Pol Pot?! Well, would you Hank? Quit dodging the hard questions!
Any way you slice it, I just don’t think there are enough country music stars willing to slander our president and call him everything but a horse thief (and why won’t you call him a horse thief Hank? huh? scared to take a stand?), and then turn around and write a dozen songs about how much they love America. I mean, you can’t consider yourself a proud, patriotic American until you’ve taken a handful of dirt and personally thrown it into the president’s face…so what are you waiting on Hank Williams the gutless? It’s clearly your move.
