On Saturday, Joe Manchin called for Biden to step down and “pass the torch” to a younger generation of Democrats…
On Sunday, immediately after Biden stepped down, 76-year-old Manchin was trying to mount his own bid against Kamala for the Democratic nomination…
This is the fastest hypocrisy I’ve ever seen from a politician.
The turnaround was less than 24 hours: “Joe is too old to run…We need fresh blood!…Wait—uhhhh…Joe’s out?…mmmm…interesting…it turns out that old blood is fine as long as it’s my old blood.”
Of course it won’t matter at all since Kamala now has the delegates to be the nominee, but just the idea that there was a sliver of a window where we maybe, kind-of, sort-of, possibly could’ve had a nominee challenge at the convention was enough for Joe Manchin to try to force a nomination that absolutely nobody wanted, and no real Democratic voter could’ve supported. [If people pushed out Biden over supposed concerns of electability, then pushing in Manchin–who would lose to Trump in a blowout–would make no sense whatsoever except to the plutocrats who think they’d win either way.]
After all, if many of us weren’t eager for Bernie Sanders to be the 2016 or 2020 nominee because he wasn’t really a member of the Democratic Party, then who on Earth could get excited about a Manchin nomination when the guy literally left the party to become an independent earlier this year?
Machin’s flaky train of thought for the last year goes something like this: “I’m not running for the senate again because I might challenge Biden for the nomination in 2024…Okay, now I’m not doing that, but I’m also leaving the party to make my disgust with it even more known after I wasted endless time blocking or stalling every bill they wanted to do the first two years where they actually controlled the senate…Now I want Biden to step down because he’s too old, even though it’s not really my part anymore and I shouldn’t be saying a damn thing right now–oh he stepped down? I should be the nominee even though I’m roughly the age Biden was when he got elected in 2020–eh, maybe I’ll just sit this one out and go play with my coal money…” …And they say liberals are wishy-washy.
