Yahoo’s new web series “Electric City” is set in some sort of vaguely defined post-apocalyptic city where electricity is a precious and coveted commodity. People are willing to steal for it, a quasi-fascist government will arrest people for overuse of it, and a secret society of “founders” (nefarious old ladies who quilt and plot murders) will kill people for trifling with it.
Tom Hanks leads the voice cast (the show is also his idea) as a hit man for the secret society, who is tasked with killing anyone his old lady handler tells him to, including underground resistance operatives who are vying for…for…well, we never exactly find out. In the twenty episodes of Electric City, there are just too many agendas that are murky and never get resolved. The series is obviously top-drawer and very quality, but frustrating for those that want clear answers and resolution (it builds up to a grand finale that never comes). Still, the graphic novel animation is absolutely beautiful, and if people enjoy it as a stylistic mood piece and feast-for-the-eyes, the time will go by and quick and pleasant. Grade…Visually: A…As a satisfying narrative: B
Yahoo’s Bachelor-spoof web series “Burning Love”…Burning Love is awesome, hilarious, and gets a little better every episode. I told you this would be short.
