It’s not hard to see why Herman Cain has been so successful with conservatives in the Republican primary. He has an extreme lack of empathy for anyone worse off than him, from illegal immigrants (“Lets make an electrified border fence”) to Palestinians (“Israel should give them nothing”) to the 99.9 percent of black Americans that aren’t rich (“They’re brainwashed”) to the unemployed (“Blame yourself”) to any minority group (“Racism doesn’t hold anyone back in a major way anymore”). Somehow a Southern black man old enough to remember the Civil Rights movement has completely forgotten everything it stood for and that amnesia has fueled his rise to the top.
AMC’s Hell on Wheels debuted last Sunday. It’s about the creation of the transnational railroad, and not about driving a Nissan.
This week’s news was surprisingly Kardashian free, so, in a fit of fame hunger, Kim shot one of the others and took the rest hostage. The media coverage of this will be enough to keep her happy until Christmas, when she will then wed another inmate on death row in a lavish, live wedding on Court TV.
HBO’s Boardwalk Empire briefly snapped awake last week after an extended period of lifelessness when Steve Buscemi’s central character survived an assassination attempt…until you remembered that this same thing happened towards the end of season 1.
Asshole of the Week: A gullible media who buys into every GOP candidate-of-the-week. First they were convinced Michelle Bachmann would take the nomination because she did well in an irrelevant straw poll a few months back (despite the fact that she’s got a better shot at winning a GLAAD acceptance award than that nomination). Then they were sure Rick Perry would take it because…well, he’s Rick Perry and he showed up (of all the fads, this is the one that I actually bought into briefly, despite always thinking Romney would eventually win) before he self-destructed. Then they thought Herman Cain would take it because a poll had him on top…and then they actually vetted him for skeletons in his closet MONTHS after he joined the race. And there’s all of the candidates who never even entered the race (Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump, Chris Christie). Well now it’s officially too late for any other candidates to enter the race so that means it’s either Rick Santorum (the one guy they’ve never rallied around) or Mitt Romney, when it was always Romney’s to lose.
