From the opening credits with a smooth Motown song playing as a Lincoln glides around the streets of LA, you can tell The Lincoln Lawyer isn’t going to reach for success, strive for ambition, unsettle you in any way, or really challenge your thinking on anything. However, it is also a pretty good movie.
It’s strange because I found myself having a good time despite myself, and actually enjoying the ride even if it’s pretty easy to tell exactly where it’s going.
What Works: William H. Macy steals a couple scenes in a too-brief role. Matthew McConaughey plays himself per usual but it didn’t bother me as much as it usually does. Marisa Tomei is pretty good in a supporting role. And the script is lively enough to keep you rolling with it.
What Doesn’t: The great Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad is wasted as a bullheaded cop. Matthew’s character Mickey grows a conscience way too quick and goes from smooth operator to sweat drenched do gooder in one scene.
What I Would Have Done Differently: Given Cranston—a great actor—more to do and maybe kept Macy’s character around for a few more good scenes. Also explore the moral dilemma Mickey is facing a bit more before just moving onto the next twist. It actually is a pretty interesting dilemma (one client of his is in jail for a murder the other client committed) and it would have been nice if they’d spent more time on it. I wouldn’t have radically altered this movie’s DNA but made a dozen small changes.
Good work, it’s pleasure to read your interesting posts. Waiting for more
