A forgettable heist film that–see, you already forgot this movie came out a month ago didn’t you?
What Works: If you laugh at all during this “comedy” (starring Zach Galifi–you know who I mean–as an armored car driver who gets talked into a heist) it’ll probably be during the first third of the film, the part leading up to the robbery and early aftermath. When Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig are talking Zach (getting great mileage out of an awful wig) into the robbery or he locks himself into his getaway vehicle or he uses “snake” contact lenses to disguise his appearance post-robbery, the movie actually does work. Plus, an opening montage explaining why Zach’s character went into the armed guard business makes you think you just might be in for a comedic “Taxi Driver”…
What Doesn’t: …but such a thing is wishful thinking. The movie more closely resembles one of those absurdist duds Ben Stiller was cranking out in the late 90’s/00’s. By the time Jason Sudekis’s waaaaay too weird hitman shows up the comedy orange has been squeezed dry, and you also begin to wonder how closely the movie sticks to its true story source material as it gets increasingly hard to believe.
What I Would Have Done Differently: The movie is barely 90 minutes long but it feels longer. And pacing is everything in comedy…
