I know, I know, this movie came out a month ago and why am I posting Monday’s reviews on Tuesday? Oh well, I’ll crank out a few reviews today and just hope people show up…
What Works: The script is generic, the villain (clearly based on the late Steve Jobs, who did nothing but innovate) is in poor taste, the voice performances lack specificity, and the direction is a little all-over-the place. It doesn’t help that this is the exact kind of movie that thinks pointing to a head of lettuce when a character says “let us help you” is hilarious. So what’s the one reason to see this movie? The sight of seeing animal/food hybrids. Maybe I was fooled by the bright colors, but there does seem to be something creative about seeing food monsters like a Tacodile or a potato-potamus. Whenever they were rolling out these gentle monstrosities, I enjoyed it.
What Doesn’t Work: Read the first two sentences of the “What Works” section.
What I Would Have Done Differently: Maybe not have used the “there’s a leek in the boat!” over a food leak three separate times or written a script that was actually clever instead of just thinking it is.
