The 4th of July (so often just an occasion to get drunk and shoot fireworks) has put me in an unusually reflective mood. I wondered all weekend the question of “What is Freedom?” and “Do we have more or less of it than previous generations?” It’s a question I try to answer during my debate a little later today but will be dwelling on in a series of items all week long.
So stay tuned and weigh in below to tell me your definition of freedom.
Freedom is the opportunity to make choices within a framework of the Rule of Law. Freedom is not Liberty, nor should the two concepts be confused. Liberty infers a lack of choices and an absence of opportunity to exercise our initiative. Patrick Henry was a Whig; he preferred Liberty. I’m a Democrat; I prefer Freedom.
Being able to get drunk or buy beer on a Sunday
Freedom is choice.
Thanks for your responses everyone. I had hoped for a little bit more feedback but I do appreciate everyone who responded
