After a couple of weeks where scripted television more or less took a vacation—when the only new episodes of TV available are “Mulaney” and some On-Demand-only episodes of the cancelled “Selfie,” you know things are rough—it seemed to come back last night as CBS and ABC decided to be TV networks again.
Galavant…I have a feeling most people will either love or hate this “fantasy” (though nothing fantastical has happened yet) medieval musical comedy. For every one person who will go along with the premise, there’s probably two that just can’t get over all that damn singing, but this show is only on for four weeks, and I’m willing to give it a chance. At least until the cable networks wake back up and Sunday nights become must-see again. In last night’s episode(s?), John Stamos’ cameo was pretty good, and apparently Ricky Gervais will show up down the road, but the real discovery is Karen David—I’ve never seen any of the main four characters in anything before, and she’s the one that leaves the strongest impression. Grade: B [But if you can’t get through musicals, there’s really nothing here for you]
The Good Wife…Another strong episode for a show that has been on fire for two years, but (mostly) gone under-the-radar for it. It doesn’t help that The Good Wife is literally the only show on CBS I would watch right now, and I suspect that’s true for a lot of major TV critics, who may almost take this show for granted for that reason. Anyway, last night’s episode is another reminder of why you should be watching, and it helped that the episode’s main focus was Carey and Kalinda with Alicia sidelined from the main plot. One complaint: the weirdest thing about this series is that it’s usually weakest when Alicia is front and center. Grade for Episode: A
Great post!
I agree that The Good Wife deserves an A.
Haven’t watch the other one and musical makes me not want to……
