Yeah, I hated this movie.
What Works: Channing Tatum proves that he definitely is ready to be considered for a decent movie role. I feel half-bad for this guy because he’s never been BAD in anything, yet he has starred in more shitty movies than one man should have to. Come on guys, let’s see if we can get him out of the Nicolas Sparks/dance movie ghetto and get him in something I would watch for more than just reviewing purposes. [And I’m not talking about broad comedies like 21 Jump Street.]
What Doesn’t Work: Oh man…well, okay, so you THINK that this movie will be about a woman who lost her memory and a guy has to struggle to make her remember. You THINK that right? Well really, this is the story of how a cool, progressive artist suffers brain damage and becomes a shitty, sorority house brat that doesn’t even attempt to make things work with her husband so much as agree to live with her conservative family. So basically, it’s the story of a woman who made real progress in five years of her life, then forgets that exact window of progress after a car accident, and goes back to being a shitty person. Can you see where this movie isn’t enjoyable, or romantic, or particularly interesting?
What I Would Have Done Differently: I think Rachel McAdams is probably a good actress, but she needs to start being good again pronto. Because all this Morning Glory/The Vow/Notebook horse shit is getting old fast. Seeing her take this route reminds me of when Reese Witherspoon decided to become a “product” more than a real actress, and it’s depressing as hell.
