I know this race is already about played out and most of you are probably ready to hear about something but…too bad, for now at least because an observation really struck me this week that this race is unlike any other I’ve ever seen. Now most of you might say “Well no shit,” but what I mean by different is that REPUBLICANS don’t like their own candidates.
On the one hand you’ve got Mitt Romney who most actual republicans seem to hate. Either because 1. “He’s really a Democrat,” which I wish was true the same way I wish Obama was really as liberal as his opponents say. Or 2. “He’s a Mormon,” which is perhaps not the best reason to hate Romney, but it is a powerful one in a party where the majority considers themselves evangelical Christians.
On the other hand you’ve got Newt who brings his own (in the words of a Romney Super-PAC ad) “Baggage.” Ever since the man won South Carolina the power players in his OWN party have launched a full scale campaign against him. Seriously, all the big voices in his own party have taken out full page editorials denouncing what a “nightmare” it would be if he was the nominee.
So this is the first primary I can remember where a party is having to hold their nose to pick a candidate. Either the voters will hold theirs and vote Romney or the power players will hold theirs and be forced to back Gingrich, but is either a winning solution against Obama? I’m not so sure.
Is this yet another article written about how the Republican candidates for president suck? Well sure it is, but at the same time it’s honestly pointing out that there may never have been a presidential primary where all the candidates are so hated (and yes, I would absolutely include the still-going Ron Paul in that because he’s hated more by Republicans than Democrats) by their party so LATE into the primary. The fact that Romney is the certain front-runner but Republicans STILL haven’t fully warmed up to him means they probably never will. And if they never will, then why would anyone want to see his face for four years as president?
