As we close out the year, let’s take a look at everything our wonderful Republicans did for us in 2011: First the new Tea Party-led House of Representatives kick started the year by holding the economy hostage over renewing the Bush tax cuts, then they held it hostage over passing a yearly budget, then they held it hostage over privatizing Medicare, then they held it hostage over the debt ceiling, and they ended the year by holding it hostage over…uhhh…renewing the payroll tax cuts? So as you can see, they’ve been up to plenty of fresh, innovative solutions…in holding the economy hostage.
Quote of the Year provided by Elizabeth Warren (who will hopefully be a senator-elect this time next year): “No one in this country got rich on their own. No one. You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.”
Runner Up Quote provided by Stephen Colbert: “Since Alabama passed their radical anti-immigration bill, illegal immigrants have fled Alabama in droves, stealing yet another thing Americans would like to do.” He ain’t lyin’.
As New Year’s Eve approaches, I plan to end the site’s first year with a listing of every movie I’ve seen this year from worst to best all the way up to number 1. [But don’t expect to see the movie New Year’s Eve anywhere near the top spot. I watched it yesterday and by the end of it there wasn’t an open eye in the house…because everyone was asleep.]
Asshole of the Year: A four way tie between Gaddafi, Mubarak, Kim Jong Ill, and whoever Tunisia’s decades long dictator was (it’s a sign of progress, his very name escapes from memory by year’s end). 2011 said good riddance to these men who destroyed countries by spreading fear and intimidation…now if only 2012 can say the same for America’s Tea Party. Still, from my view the world is looking a little bit brighter every day.
Happy new year Alabama liberal
